Our Honeymoon in Wine Country, NY

By Jessica

I’ve been a married lady all of about 2 weeks now. The whole idea of being married is still settling in on me. Wedding pictures are forthcoming I promise, but today I want to talk about the honeymoon.

We stayed at the Savanna House on Seneca lake, in the honeymoon sweet. It was absolutely delightful. The whole thing was the size of a small apartment decorated in the shabby chic style that really reminds me of NY, Finger Lakes style. When we entered the room there were lavender scented candles alight, and tranquil music playing. It was absolutely perfect! What’s better is that the masseuse arrived about 2 minutes after we did, starting this honeymoon off right. We ended the night pretty early with a bottle of cider that was a wedding gift, cheese crackers and veggies that I had brought for snacks throughout the week.

After a hearty breakfast at a local diner we ventured to Pulteney Square and then did the Keuka Lake Wine tour. We finished off the day by ordering an obscene amount of Chinese food and a nice long bath.

In case you are wondering these are the wineries we visited: Bully Hill, Keuka Vineyards, Heron Hill, Dr. Frank’s Wine Cellars, Deep Root, & Yates Cellars.

The next day we ventured to Watkins Glen for breakfast at Glen Mountain Bakery and a short hike that deserves its own post (coming soon).

Lunch was burgers at the Village Marina. Which put us into a food coma enough to take a nap. Since most winerys close at 6 and we woke up at 5:30 we decided to hang out in our sweet, read and find a nice place for dinner. We decided on Nonna’s Trattoria in Geneva. It was classic Italian food, that was delicious, another food coma ensued.

The following day we chose a few wineries along Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake to hit as we made our way back to pick the Brody Monster.

The wineries that we visited on this part of the trip included: HJ Wiemer Winery, Pompous Ass Winery, Red Newt, Wagner Winery, Lamoreaux Landing, and Sheldrake Point.

With puppy in tow we finally made it back to our favorite camping spot for a few days to finalize the week.

I couldn’t ask for a more perfect honeymoon. I think Chuck enjoyed it as well. It was simple, easy, and perfectly romantic, as well as very us. We also ended up coming home with about 2 cases of wine, so I think we did alright.

If your interetested to see what else NY wine country has to offer check out my Wine Country Bucket List.

A Wine Country, NY Bucket List

By Jessica

This is a laid back Wine Country, NY Bucket List, focused on fun activities in the Finger Lakes Region of NY.

Wine Country

So if you didn’t know this already Chuck and I are tying the knot in approximately 12 days. It’s pretty exciting. What’s also exciting is the first full week off of work I have had since our trip to Ireland in 2012.

I’m doing a happy dance, yelling “woop, woop!” with my hands in the air right now just fyi.

I have been looking forward to this forreeeeeeeeeveeeeeeerrrrrr.

Seriously though this might be the better than the wedding just a week of Chuck and I, and maybe some Brody cuddles too. Since I can’t stop thinking about this I thought it might be fun to a bucket list of all the stuff I want to do while we are on our honeymoon. The first half of the week we will be in the Finger Lakes region of NY also known as wine country, the later half will be home, or the Adirondacks, we are leaving that part up in the air because why not?

  1. Sleep late
  2. Get a massage – we are already scheduled for Sunday night when we arrive !!!
  3. Drink wine
  4. Eat decadent, overpriced food
  5. Howe Caverns – this one is a maybe, it might be more fun to save for when we have some little ones.
  6. Watkins Glen – This is a must.   IMG_1938
  7. Cornell’s Botanical Gardens – I’ve actually already been, but if we are looking for something to do it would be worth another trip. It’s beautiful.
  8. Waterfalls – I’ve already seen a few but this region is full of them so I’d like to check out a few more Cascadilla Gorge is one of them.
  9. Do a Wine Trail
  10. Hit up a farm/farmers market/stand – these are plentiful but since we will be there during the week I’ll take whatever we happen to come across

And there you have it a list of everything I would like to do while we are in wine country. This list is pretty laid back and negotiable since to me the most important thing is to relax and enjoy this time with Chuck.

Do you have any great wine country ideas? Let me know I’m definitely interested in more ideas!

New York City & Butter

By Jessica

Recently I had a birthday, and the sweet guy that chuck is took me all
the way to New York City to eat at Butter; a fabulous restaurant where Alex Guarnaschelli
is the executive chef. The experience was amazing, the architecture in the restaurant
was beautiful, the food phenomenal. We were treated to an individual serving of
pickled hummus each, and then we ordered Seared Diver Scallops, with black
rice, mustard and bacon. For our entree’s I had homemade ravioli, with roasted
oyster mushrooms, pecorino cheese, and fresh herbs, while chuck had Duck with
turnips, cabbage and blood orange in a scrumptious sauce. I can say that I actually
enjoyed the mushrooms in my meal. I was a little nervous about ordering it and
not liking it, but homemade ravioli sounded too good, so I decided to be brave,
it was so worth it; it might have even made me a convert.

The rest of the trip was just fun, exploring and filling our bellies; we
got gyros, and kebabs from carts, along with hot dogs, pretzels, sandwiches and
of course pizza. My favorite part about the city, is the culture, and the
architecture. Oh and take a look at the food markets in Chinatown.

I apologize for not taking any food pictures, but to be honest I would
really rather just eat, and enjoy. I like to be a part of the experience, not just
see it from behind a lens, maybe next time I’ll get some good ones.

Have You Ever Been to Vermont?

By Jessica

I go there fairly often, seeing as my love is from that granola-y state. I know that in the fall there are quite a few city folk that like to venture up there for its quiet, scenic beauty. The locals call them Leaf Peepers, and get very annoyed when they drive erratically in order to take pictures out of car windows. There is a lot more to this state than leaves however.

The green mountain state is home to a number of gorgeous mountains, including some of the East’s favorite skiing locations. Everyone sells maple syrup, Christmas trees, and honey. Everyone is generally happy, and sweet. Be forewarned there is a lot of camo, and hunting garb around. I have been to some of the best hole in the wall dinners in that state also.

When you go you should try the local dairy, after all Vermont is home to Cabot Cheese, not to mention the ice cream. The home of Ben & Jerry’s can be found here, along with multiple other places to stop for a “Creamy”, or soft serve ice cream to the non-local. Cider mills, and sugar houses dot the entire state, and make great little pit stops for a taste test, shopping, and even some education on the processes.

If you would like to talk about breweries well, this place has about a million and one. I am a big fan of breweries, unique tastes in both brews and food, and I always look for them wherever I travel. The same can be said of wineries, as there are numerous local wineries that offer tastings and/or tours.
Summers on any one of the many lakes are magical. Since everything is done, at a slow and relaxed pace anyway, you can’t ever be in anyone’s way. Oh and I swear there is a town wide garage sale every darn weekend. Those things are everywhere.
Each little town is packed full of quant little shops with a ton of local products, as well as historical homes, and monuments. There are a lot of monuments. Take some time to chat with a few of the locals chances are their town is famous for something, or there is something nearby that you have to see, or at the very least which bar has the best grub.
Seriously, check out this place. It’s a good time.
